Latin Quarter

Highlights

Guided tour of the Intellectual and cultural quarter of Paris

Description

If you like to take your time and discover foreign parts at your leisure, then this is a tour for you.

Once you have reached the meeting point in front of the Pantheon, the majestic mausoleum which is home to the tombs of the most famous and prestigious citizens of France, you will be taken for a walking tour of the Latin Quarter by an experienced licensed guide.

Immediately behind the Pantheon you will discover the church St Etienne du Mont, you will be able to walk inside and admire the architecture as well as the tomb of St Genevieve the Patroness Sainte of Paris, and after whom the original, since destroyed, Abbey was named. The next stop of your tour will be the magnificent Luxembourg Gardens, while strolling the gardens you will see, amongst other pieces of interest, Bartholdi’s original smaller version of the Statue of Liberty.

We will then make our way to the St Sulpice church, visiting inside before heading off to the Saint Germain area. You will be able to sit for a coffee, or whatever you feel like, at the Café des 2 Magots, the old stamping ground for many famous artists and writers. Indeed, this is where Hemingway (who was known to drink other stuff than coffee!) wrote ‘Farewell To Arms’.

You will be taken to have a quick look at the St Germain des Près church before heading off and finishing our tour at what some cite as being the oldest existing café in Paris, the Procope, originally opened in 1686, it knew a brief hiatus between the late 19th and early 20th century. Sit where other ‘famous’ customers have sat and contemplated life and other things, names such as Voltaire, Bonaparte, Danton, Benjamin Franklin or Oscar Wilde. Your tour will end with a visit of the alley behind the café, infamously known for where the original guillotine was tried out on unknowing sheep!
