Ile de la Cité & Ile Saint Louis

Highlights

Guided visit of the two historic islands on the River Seine

Description

If you like to take your time and discover foreign parts at your leisure, then this is a tour for you.

Once you have reached the meeting point at the Pont Neuf bridge at the foot of the Henri IV equestrian statue, you will be taken for a walking tour by an experienced licensed guide, you will discover the two islands that have played such a large part in the history of Paris: Ile de la Cité and Ile St Louis.

From your starting point the Pont Neuf bridge (ironically the oldest existing bridge across the River Seine), you will stroll along Place Dauphine, the triangular-shaped square initiated by Henri IV in the early 17th century, the second-oldest public square in Paris after Place des Vosges.
We will walk past the very first Royal Palace in Paris: The Conciergerie, known morbidly as the last residence of Marie-Antoinette, where she was imprisoned for the last few months of her life before being guillotined. Your guide will then take you past the Sainte Chapelle, a 13th century Royal Chapel, with its magnificent stained-glass windows, so precious to the French patrimony that they were removed for protection during the second World War.

More Gothic architectural marvels to be found on the Ile de la Cité is of course Notre Dame Cathedral, recently devastated by a fire, you will still be able to admire it from not too far, all along your guide will be giving you the benefit of their vast knowledge.

After a short break, you will be taken to the Ile St Louis, crossing the Pont Rouge in doing so, here you will appreciate the picturesque boutiques and art galleries, as well as its imposing 17th century mansions, which were in the past, homes to illustrious figures such as: Wagner, Listz, Chopin, Marie Curie and Elena Rubinstein.

We finish our stroll on rue St Louis en L’Ile, where you can if you wish, try the ‘best ice-cream in Paris’ at Berthillon!
