Historical Central Paris + Montmartre
Highlights
Guided tour of the historical Heart of Paris, including a visit to Montmartre
Description
Once you have met your local guide near the Comédie Française, you will be taken on walking tour of Paris’s must-see monuments, starting with Japanese architect I.M.Pei’s iconic Pyramid, commissioned by President François Mitterand, a construction which initially caused controversy is principally made of panes of glass, it serves as the main entrance to the Louvre Museum.
You will be taken over Pont Neuf, the oldest bridge in Paris, taking you by the Ile de la Cité, here are located several monuments of great historical importance. We can pass by Place Dauphine the second oldest public square/park in Paris, behind Place Royale, and then come across such beautiful buildings as the St Chapelle and Conciergerie. The Conciergerie, known morbidly as the last residence of Marie-Antoinette, where she was imprisoned for the last few months of her life before being guillotined. Your guide will then take you past the Sainte Chapelle, a 13th century Royal Chapel, with its magnificent stained-glass windows, so precious to the French patrimony that they were removed for protection during the second World War.
Continuing to Notre Dame, spending time having a coffee break and taking in the atmosphere of one of the most famous landmarks anywhere in the world, you will then take the metro to Montmartre, including the ascension by the famous ‘Funicular’ which takes you to the foot of Sacré Coeur. You will enjoy an hour guided tour of the oldest quartier of Paris, Montmartre the place that dreams are made of.
Your tour of Montmartre can start at the Basilica Sacré Coeur, world famous Romano-Byzantine inspired construction, said to symbolise ‘making amends for the crimes of the Commune’ or to ‘honour those who died during the Franco-Prussian war’, either way it’s a magnificent monument. The first foundation stones being laid in 1875 and the construction being finished in 1914. Since then, millions of visitors have made the climb to this iconic symbol of Paris, very few we think were disappointed.
Once you have finished visiting the basilica, your guide will take you around the rest of the Montmartre area, the oldest quarter of Paris, once frequented by the poor and wretched of the city but now coveted by the chic and well to heel. You will stroll along the very cobbled-stoned streets of the hamlet, and soak in the atmosphere as you go along.
Just a little further up the hill is Place du Tertre, surrounded by picturesque cafés and restaurants, and the showcase for local contemporary artists and portrait painters, why not go and get your portrait or caricature as a permanent souvenir of your visit!
The guide will finish with you at the Sacré Coeur and orientate them on how to continue their day.
